The original film with Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum (Mitchum has a small role in the remake) is vastly better. The Scorsese version tries so hard to be complex and "deep" that it suffocates under the weight of its own pretensions. There is no single individual in the remake to attract the viewer's approval; which defeats the point of the story which is a take on the "good vs. evil" theme.
