The high quality of writing that Linda Grant displayed in When I lived in Modern Times, winner of the British Orange Prize for fiction, has been maintained with her new novel. Alix, a middle-aged woman living in the south of France, independently wealthy and bitingly intelligent, goes home to Liverpool to be with her dying mother. When she meets Joseph, an American architect, she finds herself erotically attracted to him. But Joseph is at war with himself, mourning his wife who has left him to rediscover herself. Family secrets unfold and Joseph and Alix find their way through the consequences of choices made long ago.
