This is the 19th book in the terrific series about Wyoming Game Warden Joe Pickett, his family, and his good friend, falconer Nate Romanowski (who is a fascinating character). While you might not think a series about a game warden would be very interesting or exciting, you would be wrong; Joe somehow encounters a wide range criminal activity. He has both friends and enemies in high places. And he always strives to do the right thing, even when it costs him mightily. Nate calls him “Dudley Do-Right”, which is not far off. This series is set in the beautiful state of Wyoming, where the wildlife are plentiful and the environment is glorious. Many of the books deal with current issues, and this one does too, though we don’t find out what the issue is until the end of the book nears. Most of the books in this series are 4-5 star books. This book has an interesting plot, but I am sorry to say that this book contains so much gruesome violence that I found it stomach-turning. Way too many people end up dead, which is bad enough, but the graphic descriptions of the murders are grotesque. So I have to give this book a lower rating—maybe 2-2.5 stars.
