The House of the Spirits has been my favorite book for 10 years now. The expansive text traces 3 generations of a family through the decades before and immediately after Salvador Allende's election as the first openly elected Marxist president in Chile. As a relative of the former president, Allende has a unique perspective that, combined with her lively use of magical realism, makes for a compelling, meticulous and vibrant read.
