Watchable (Fair): RV (2006) **½ 98 min. starring Robin Williams, Cheryl Hines (Curb Your Enthusiasm), “Jo Jo” Levesque (young singer/actress “Aquamarine”), and Jeff Daniels (Dumb and Dumber) - This was a strange film. It felt strange from the get go and didn’t let up until the credits ended. I caught myself asking myself “what did I just see here?” The film’s about this guy who takes his family on a cross country RV trip to save his job instead of taking his family on a Hawaiian vacation. The film itself is not as bad as most critics lead you to believe. Yes, there are some horrible scenes (Robin Williams jive-talking his son out of getting beaten up by some basketball knuckleheads; Robin Williams impersonation of Wile E. Coyote trying to dislodge a RV off a cliff). It seems that all the bad scenes involve Robin Williams, except for the one scene where he chases the Jeff Daniels’ bus via bicycle. Williams was definitely miscast in this film – his usual comedic timing was thwarted by a generally unfunny script. But the saving grace in this picture is Williams’ family, who deliver some good lines, and Jeff Daniel & family – who are so weird, they become fun to watch. Look for the scene where Cheryl Hines sings “GTO” – very funny.
