It’s difficult to write a review of this show because it’s all going to sound like a terrible cliché. Walt Longmire is a rural sheriff who dresses and talks like an old west cowboy, doesn’t go by the book, and instead writes his own rules as he goes. See? Sounds awful. But every now and then somebody comes along and does familiar material so well that it transcends clichés and is actually fresh and novel. I enjoy the occasional friendly banter and occasional angry opposition of the dialog, which is really quite funny at times. I enjoy the cultural enmity between the white town and adjacent Native American reservation. And I very much enjoy Robert Taylor’s quiet intensity as a man who says little and never wastes a word. But while Walt is the central character, the series does not neglect the supporting characters, who frequently get the best lines. As the only law enforcement in this sparsely settled county, Longmire is not just a detective, but frequently also serves as arbiter of any and all conflicts which arise. And as he resolves these dilemmas, Walt treats each situation as an individual matter, seeking justice as a higher principle than enforcing the letter of the law. And yes, occasionally the stories veer into the improbable, but I’d prefer that to the clichés anyway. In closing, the show deserves what I consider the highest recommendation one can give a television show, which is, Longmire is not the same old thing. (I must admit, though, that the show loses its way in the last 2 seasons, which are not as good.)
