Matt Lewis and Renato Poliafito certainly didn't, when they left their advertising careers behind, pooled their life savings, and opened their dream bakery, Baked, in Brooklyn, New York, a few years back. The visions that danced in their heads were of other, brand-new kinds of confections . . .

Which is not to say that Lewis and Poliafito sidestep tradition absolutely. Their Chocolate Pie (whose filling uses Ovaltine) pays loving homage to the classic roadside-diner dessert. Their Baked Brownies will wow even the most discriminating brownie connoisseur. And their Chocolate Chip Cookies? Words cannot describe. Whether trendsetting or tried-and-true, every idea in this book is freshly Baked.

This book is amazing! So are its sequels, if you're looking for more recipes.

I never knew how granola should taste until I made the recipe in this book. Now, I can't be bothered with any other granola. That may sound silly, but if the authors can transform something as simple as granola, think what they can do with more complicated foods.

The chocolate chip cookies are amazing.
The sugar cookies are amazing.
The brownies are amazing.
The millionaire's shortbread is amazing.
The maple cupcakes are amazing.

I have not yet had a recipe in this book fail. Everything I've made has been great.

Yes, they add extra steps like refrigerating cookie dough before portioning it onto the baking sheet. They ask you to bake on parchment paper. So, you need to be at least somewhat comfortable in the kitchen; it's not a beginner's book. But it's also not hard. As long as you're willing to use the ingredients they recommend (e.g. good quality chocolate not the cheap stuff; butter when asked; shortening when asked) and follow directions, everything turns out wonderfully! Some of the quantities will seem a bit odd because they're scaling down from restaurant-scale recipes - but the scale-down appears to have been well tested.

On top of that, every recipe is beautifully illustrated.

I cannot recommend this book enough to people who love to bake!

I have owned this book for several years and it is my go to baking book. I haven't made every single recipe in the book, but I have made the majority and they are all excellent. Each page has a little synopsis about the recipe and a bakers note. I always read these before starting and find them very helpful. A few of my go to recipes from this book include the baked brownie, chocolate chip cookies, and pie crust. But there are so many other wonderful recipes in this book (too many to list) and whenever I bake anything from it the results are always rewarding and delicious!

This is a great baking book for the overachiever and/or perfectionist. But don’t let that description scare you off. If you are willing to learn a few new techniques, invest in quality ingredients and follow a well-detailed process, you can get some very tasty and professional results. The recipes aren’t difficult, but they can get complex. Not all the recipes have photos, but many have and are presented very well. This book has inspired me and contains some of my new favorite goodies. Sweet & Salty Chocolate cake is heaven!
