"What does everyone in the modern world need to know? Canadian psychologist Jordan B. Peterson's answer to this most difficult of questions uniquely combines the hard-won truths of ancient tradition with the stunning revelations of cutting-edge scientific research. Humorous, surprising and informative, Dr. Peterson tells us why skateboarding boys and girls must be left alone, what terrible fate awaits those who criticize too easily, and why you should always pet a cat when you meet one on the street. What does the nervous system of the lowly lobster have to tell us about standing up straight (with our shoulders back) and about success in life? Why did ancient Egyptians worship the capacity to pay careful attention as the highest of gods? What dreadful paths do people tread when they become resentful, arrogant and vengeful? Dr. Peterson journeys broadly, discussing discipline, freedom, adventure and responsibility, distilling the world's wisdom into 12 practical and profound rules for life, shattering the modern commonplaces of science, faith and human nature, while transforming and ennobling the mind and spirit of its readers. Jordan B. Peterson has taught mythology to lawyers, doctors and businessmen and has helped his clinical clients manage depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety, and schizophrenia. With his students and colleagues at Harvard and the University of Toronto, Dr. Peterson has published more than a hundred scientific papers, transforming the modern understanding of personality, while his book, Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief, revolutionized the psychology of religion. Relatively straightforward and sensible "rules " to live by supported by somewhat rambling and convoluted (and somewhat tedious for me) combinations of anecdotes, scientific "evidence", biblical references and opinion. This was not an easy read (a bit odd given that one of the rules is to be precise in your speech), and I left feeling not that I had been informed or offered advice so much as lectured to and sort of hectored.

I've read lots of "shelf-help" and this is like most. Read the contents and the introductory sections and skim the rest. The religious references don't add anything, and put off some readers, myself included. Could have been one-third the pages, with nothing lost. If you've nothing else to do, go ahead and read it, but for those on the lengthy wait list, find some other material in the meantime.

A must for anyone who has that feeling that something's missing in their life.
His youtube series are also worthwhile.

I don’t find so much intereting. Difficult to find the flow in the text

Psychologist Jordan B. Peterson gathers his theories, ideologies, and revelations in a self-help book. He brings light to many hardships one will experience throughout the vigorous, fast-paced life in the modern era. He never fails to reveal the truths of most misconceptions in living an ideal life and offers a multitude of ways to move forward; to progress past personal troubles and approach adversities with wisdom. Social norms and cultural references are touched upon extensively to ensure that everyone is fit to understand how to shape their character accordingly. An intelligent part of this book is the historical application -- the author talks regarding ancient Egyptians and other civilizations -- why so many disciplines alien to us now were practiced and their importance. Anyone looking to improve their overall qualities or disposition should read through the 12 rules to discover the hidden freedom and respect encapsulated in ourselves. Readers can recognize the hypocrisy within, gaining the profound ability to destroy the arrogance and resentment. -@Mercurial_Series of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library.

I'm placing a hold on Jordan Peterson's 12 Lessons for Life but am hoping I can pick up at Sunnyside location. I don't see that option.

I could pick up anywhere Ottawa central i.e. Main library on Laurier but not sure how to select the location

I have read less than a handfull of self help books throughout my lifetime and this book was worth the time and effort. This is a book that will be added to my collection and read and referred to many more times.

So much food for thought! Peterson insightfully incorporates interesting science and stories to back up his rules and help his readers gain insight into why living according to these rules is positive. #PACL2018

A great read or listen. The author references a lot of historical texts and while you many not agree with all the examples the book is a good foundation/reminder about what to consider in life and those you share it with.
