Six years ago NASA discovered the possibility of alien life within the solar system. Soon after, new life forms began to appear and half of Mexico was quarantined. A probe was launched to collect samples, but crashed upon re-entry over Central America. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain 'the creatures.' Now a U.S. journalist has agreed to escort a shaken American tourist through the infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the U.S. border.

This isn't a movie, it's propaganda.

Don't expect Star Wars. This is an interesting though drawn out somewhat romance with rather strange and unique aliens. Sort of a Sci-Fi adventure: though, realistically not much Sci-Fi. Worth watching. After all the wait, the end is abrupt though appropriate. The build-up could have been more intense in several ways.

If you are expecting a typical horror movie with aliens you will be disappointed. In fact, at its core "Monsters" is a very human, relationship driven romance and survival/suspense movie somewhat along the lines of "African Queen". I found this movie was it was too slow paced and the ending was unsatisfactory. For this reason I grade it as mediocre and to be viewed at your own risk to your entertainment enjoyment.
MPAA rating: R (for language).

I really liked the setting. It felt real. Unfortunately, the last 1/2 hour of the movie did not pan out for me and the relationship between the leads felt way too forced.

A few years after a NASA satellite containing extraterrestrial biological samples crashes into the sea off of Central America, northern Mexico is literally crawling with enormous tentacled lifeforms. In an effort to limit the spread of these monsters several hundred square miles are cordoned off with giant walls and fences while military jets make regular airstrikes dropping bombs and poison gas. Into this no man's land of devastated cities and rusting wrecks ventures a man and woman; he’s a photojournalist, she’s the boss’ daughter entrusted to his care. Accompanied by a small contingent of hired guides they make a desperate trek across this hostile landscape in order to reach the safety of America. This was truly one of the year’s more pleasant surprises for me. I expected a good old fashioned popcorn movie along the lines of Cloverfield but what I got instead was an intelligently written, artistically presented drama of surprising depth. Gareth Edwards avoids all the cheap horror conventions we’ve come to expect, there are no gratuitous jolts or scientific doublespeak and the gore factor is kept to a highly effective minimum; sometimes a brief flash of white bone or series of bloody handprints along the side of a ruined yacht speak volumes. The camerawork shifts effortlessly between richly detailed panoramas and an intimate verité while a soundtrack of sustained bass chords keeps you on the edge of your seat. Lastly, the special effects are amazing including the creatures themselves which resemble gargantuan glimmering octopi with the vocal chords of a T. Rex. Some sombre political satire is a bit overdone in parts (although the film’s underlying sting remains intact) but the film’s final scene, in which an unexpected comparison is made between a pair of monsters and their human counterparts, was pure movie magic.

This movie is a complete waste....
the story premise is following a man with a camera taking pictures of everything and nothing....the intrigue is the subliminal messages of pictures of alien octopuses being shot at on every tv set being shown throughout the one pays attention to the pictures/news flashes in the background and they may as well had re-runs of the Munsters or I Love Lucy for some comedy relief.....It's really similar to District 9 meets a camera, TVs and octopuses in Mexico ....a complete mess....

This movie was a huge let down. For a B movie it is excellent, acting and story are all good. However, the aliens are awful!! Giant octopuses!!!! Really!! Something a little more original would have been better, thankfully they play a very minor role. The ending is terrible and needs some serious tweaking. Also, what's with the name of the movie, Monsters, really!! Come on…. If you like sci-fi this is worth a watch, if you are expecting a Hollywood big budget movie, stay away.

I let the other high ratings make me think that this might be a good movie. It absolutely is not! I blame the writer director Gareth Edwards. The story is weak and dialog is ridiculous and utterly boring. Watching this was a total waste of my time.

i was intrigued by the idea of the film. alien life forms crash in north america. certain areas become quarantined. man helps woman journey back to america some 'how the hell did that just happen' romance sparked. we see the creatures, hear the battle going on between man and creature, dead bodies and pretty much thats it.sounds exciting and it could've been. i was more so left with the "is that it?' floating through my mind when the ending came.

I do like this movie. It's not as monsterish as most horror films The connection between the two characters is really refreshing. Plus I may add I am once again a true admirer of Whitney Able. She caught my eye previously, but now she has truly captured my heart. Her short hair-cut is the best ever....of any female . LV-6/22/11 @ 8:32p
