Loved "Tommy" the rock opera! I can hear Tommy and I can see Tommy in the lyrics of this great rock opera. I never have gotten tired of hearing the story or the music! It remains a rock classic with me!

Willy, I have to correct you buddy. It's a story about the boy, Tommy, who sees his father get killed by his mom's lover. You had that part reversed. The father was away at war and then the wife is told that he is missing and is presumed dead. That's why the wife begins a new romantic relationship. But when the father gets back home and really wasn't killed in war, he finds his wife with another man and this man man kills the father and Tommy sees it. It's a musical masterpiece. Top marks in my opinion.

I always found the album in its entirety kind of creepy. Several good songs with Daltry on lead vocals. But the characters portrayed in the opera were creepy. Even Tommy himself appeared a creep. Only Sally Simpson inspired empathy from myself. Of coarse it was later discovered Townsend was a closet pediphile which would make him Uncle Ernie in the opera. Not a classic album in my mind. I need to add I did enjoy the instrumentals. Of coarse the intro to Pinball Wizard is a classic piece of Rock. But this album at its best IS a collection of songs. The concept pales from several great individual moments.

The rock opera Tommy was groundbreaking in it's scope and focus for it's day. It paved the way for the idea that an album wouldn't just be a bunch of songs thrown together to fill up both sides of the 12" vinyl, but they would all tie into a central theme.
Tommy took that much further by telling a story. The story is about a small boy who see's his father kill his mother's lover and this causes the boy to recede inside himself and stop talking or in fact seeing.
It takes may different paths by his mother to final break Tommy free of his self imposed prison.
