The best you can say for this Almodovar flick is that it is a quasi-amusing throw away. The production values are pretty fine and the dopiness of many of the characters is endearing.
However, Almodovar always veers away from any real social commentary on his sexual politics agenda.
If you want more humour in this type of a situation, see "Andy Warhol's Frankenstein". If you want social commentary, view Bruce LaBruce's "The Misandrists".

This movie is completely recognizable as a Pedro Almodovar film, but at the same time, it is not of the same quality of his other work. The story is convoluted (just for the sake of confusion), and the plot twist does not pay off. The biggest weakness is that the motivation of each character is not explained, or explored. Example, Why would the good doctor go through all the trouble??? Is it revenge? Is it desire? Is it madness? Someone told him to do it?
Just because? Etc.

The description is completely misleading - early on the indestructible skin is mentioned for about 5 seconds and never again. This is NOT a modern day Frankenstein story - it is revenge porn. Aside from the two leads, the acting is atrocious. The music is a cross between a John Carpenter horror movie and a daytime soap opera. Much of the plot doesn't make sense with multiple flashbacks that only serve to convolute the story.
With a high IMDB rating of 7.6, I can only say that those who rated it highly are wrong.

Great movie. Very creepy and twisted. I have seen most of Almodovar's movies, and it's amazing to see a director/writer who made Atame, and Women on the verge of nervous breakdown evolve into someone who produced this movie and Bad Education.
His movie making taste has changed quite drastically over the years, although it seems with his upcoming works, he's trying to dial it back.

Totally not what I was expecting from the words on the box. Totally twisted.

Don't even bother. It is one of the worst movies I have seen in years. Not only the script but the photography, the acting, everything looks so fake. The dialogue is terrible. No se molesten

How do you describe a Pedro Almodovar film and still do it justice? Once again he combines his love for the female form with his signature penchant for extreme gender-fucking to produce yet another warped telenovela guaranteed to delight his twisted fans and confound the uninitiated. This time around he focuses on the brilliant yet unorthodox plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Ledgard (Antonio Banderas, sexier than ever) whose highly contentious experiments in human skin regeneration are being carried out in a secret underground laboratory. The subject of these experiments is the lovely yet volatile Vera, an apparent prisoner of the good doctor, who spends her days practicing yoga and writing graffiti on the walls of her spartan cell while wearing a skintight body stocking. But who exactly is Vera? Why is she being held captive and why is Robert so obsessed with her? And while we’re at it, why is his housekeeper’s son dressed like a jaguar? This is quintessential Almodovar, a cinematic magician at the height of his powers whose appreciation of the absurd has not mellowed over the years but has rather grown sharper and more focused. Bravo!

Take "Eyes Without a Face", mix in some"Vertigo", add just a soupcon of "The Face of Another", and some unusually ferocious Almodovar gender bending, and VOILA! Not quite as much fun as it should have been, but the style is formidable, and really much more satisfying than "Broken Embraces". Pedro has done Banderas a great favor by casting him in this role, and he almost manages to remind us why we thought he was "all that" so many years ago. The real discovery here is Elena Anaya. This is the 2nd film of hers I've seen, and after "Room in Rome", and this, one applauds her commitment and audaciousness. (For a stunningly beautiful woman, she sure has no problem doing some weird sh-t).

This is just an amazing drama/thriller. Banderas is fantastic. If you want to watch a twisted revenge movie this is definitely on the A list. Wow! Chilling and twisted minus the Hollywood gore. This movie would make Alfred Hitchcock proud! Highly recommend.
