A wonderful story of a family struggling to survive the Dust Bowl in 1930's Oklahoma. Starred reviews!

Nov 20, 2016

I didn’t think I’d want to finish reading this book which is set in 1030’s Oklahoma dust bowl, but the story line pulled me in. How does a family survive the dust and the failed crops? Not only is it an economic struggle, it is a struggle to keep the family intact. When Annie Bell, a mother struggling with keeping the constant dust out of the house, her family clothed and fed, she dreams about what life could be. Of course, Annie loves her husband, her 15-year-old daughter who hides her pregnancy from her mother, her son who suffers from asthma and at 7 years of age still doesn’t speak. When an affair with the mayor of their small town offers her escape and a new life in Chicago, she decides to go, but family tragedy makes her rethink her future and makes her realize the security and love she has in her hard-working husband. Even though there is sadness in the story right up to the end, the reader is left with hope.
