I love anything Mel Gibson is in.

First: yes, it does have some pacing problems through the second act. Not gonna lie.

With a modern eye, some of the visuals are kinda rough.

But: Hugh is amazing as The Toecutter. He exudes menace and a Manson-like charisma.

"Mad Max" is the first movie in the Mad Max canon, detailing the origin of Max "Mad Max" Rockatansky, a former policeman turned vigilante. The film was shot with a minimal budget by George Miller in 1979 a former ER physician turned film producer. The film is low on dialogue but presents the viewer with a dark dystopian future where the earth is ravaged by nuclear war and resource wars. In the canon "Mad Max" is set just before the nuclear war that sets the stage for the next three films. I would recommend this to anyone curious in classic cinema, I would also encourage those viewing the film to suspend their disbelief and expectations set by "Fury Road," the latest installment of series.

Just didn't enjoy it. I expected a high octane thrill ride with mui matcho moments. LAMO. I am into cheap thrills, action, and unnecessary violence and badassery that really pushes the limits of logic. Nothing. Gibson does have some good moments, dad, husband, bad ass, etc. The rest of it was a yawn. Probably going to skip the next two and go straight to Fury Road.

I just cannot enjoy a movie that Mel Gibson is in. If he wasn't such a bad person in real life, maybe I'd enjoy the movie a bit more.

Mel Gibson young. Wow. Not so much a great film, but I think you need to watch it so the other films make sense. Lots of action, adventure and grit.

Mad Max is my favorite movie series. Although this isn't the best movie in the series it's still amazing and better than the 3rd one. And made with only 300,000 dollars!!

George Miller's Mad Max is brilliant in its action-sequences and overall thrills. Though there are some slight malfunctions in its transitions, this film is still far ahead of its time for being a dystopian action thriller in the latter part of the 1970s.

The original Mad Max was a well made Ozplotation film. Not all that great, with the exception of Mel Gibson. Without Mel's range from family man to full on Mad Max it would've been forgotten. The sequel and even the third one are much better, but it's interesting to see this film. It's hard to find Ozplotation films on DVD, and this one reflects the era of Australian cinema. Wish the extras were a lot better. The commentary was rather dull. No Mel, no Miller...

Fifi: They say people don't believe in heroes anymore. Well damn them! You and me, Max, we're gonna give them back their heroes!
Max: Ah, Fif. Do you really expect me to go for that crap?
Fifi: You gotta admit I sounded good there for a minute, huh?
