In The War of 1812, Berton (a master storyteller) tells this story through personal memoirs, diaries and official dispatches, this amazing story that reads like a novel. There was, however, so much suffering for such little gain. I especially enjoyed the parts about Sir Issac Brock and the Shawnee Chief Tecumeh. Berton's viewpoint was that Brock came " to represent Canadian order as opposed to American anarchy - 'peace, order and good government' rather than the more hedonistic 'life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness'."
A great book and a must read for all interested in Canadian history.
