"Think everyone over 17 has forgotten what it's like to be 16? Filmmaker John Hughes (Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Pretty In Pink) hasn't. Now Hughes delivers another funny, savvy, crowd pleasing look at adolescence in this story about a high school misfit (Eric Stoltz, Mask), who falls so head over heels for the senior class siren that he's blind to the charms of his beautiful and devoted best pal (Mary Stuart-Masterson, Fried Green Tomatoes). Some fun, some heartache, Some Kind of Wonderful!"--Container.

This is one of those movies that I didn't like that much when it first came out, but the more I see it, the more I like it. Very believable story about unrequited love among three high school students. It's more dramatic than most of the teen films of the 80's, but it's very well-acted and has some great talent.

Most think of this as a John Hughes film and while he did write and produce, it was directed by Howard Deutch, who also did "Pretty in Pink." "Wonderful" is basically "Pink" with the genders reversed. People of a certain age have an inordinate fondness for Hughes movies, particularly the Molly Ringwald trilogy and "Ferris Bueller," but they're maybe not movies that are great to watch when you're older as their flaws are glaring. Anyway, Eric Stotlz is the nice guy artist type from the wrong side of the tracks, Lea Thompson is the beautiful object of his desire, and Mary Stuart Masterston (the highlight of the film) his tomboy drummer best friend who has a crush on him. There's also a well-intentioned father, a punk rocker, and Thompson's evil rich boyfriend (every 80s movie has one). The soundtrack is not particularly memorable, but have fun with the Rolling Stones references. Thompson and Deutch would marry and they have a daughter that's now an actress.

This is one of my favorite John Hughes movies, second only to the Breakfast Club.

This is one of the least-known movies written by John Hughes. It has much in common with the hit Pretty in Pink, and I've read that Some Kind of Wonderful was an attempt to rewrite the wrong of Pretty in Pink's ending, which was changed to appease test audiences. If you are a fan of teen movies, give this one a chance, and if you like Pretty In Pink, you're bound to enjoy this, too.

Lesser known John Hughes penned romantic 80's flick. I like it but it isn't quite on the same level as his bigger hits (Breakfast Club, 16 Candles, Weird Science, etc). Similar theme of cliques and loser-ish character finding unexpected love interest.
